Abstract :
An approach for generating feasible machining sequences to a given mechanical design, using a knowledge-based system, is presented. Manufacturing knowledge applied in the production sequence generation, including machine availability, feasible production operations, production cost-tolerance relations, and successive and alternative production operations are modeled and implemented in a knowledge-based system. The approach identifies the optimal production sequence for a given design by combining qualitative knowledge deduction and quantitative numerical optimization. It can significantly improve computer-automated process planning (CAPP) systems
