Abstract
This paper describes one approach which could provide a solution to the diverse requirements, of business and residential customers for broadband services, which involves the use of very high speed digital subscriber loop (VDSL) technology for high speed delivery over existing twisted pair drops in conjunction with passive optical network (PON) feeders. It introduces the services that are being considered for broadband networks and highlights those which are considered to be the key drivers for network evolution. It then reviews the main broadband access network solutions which are currently being considered. Details of the status of VDSL and ATM PON in terms of technology and standards are given and network solutions are described which illustrate how these technologies provide a flexible and cost effective solution for future broadband access networks
