Abstract :
This paper proposes a channel-adaptive multiple description coding (MDC) method for robust video delivery in wireless ad-hoc networks. In the proposed system, our multi-stream rate allocation algorithm determines the optimal source coding rates and the amount of redundancy in MDC under time-varying network conditions. In addition, our flexible MD coder generates two correlated descriptions from a single description coder using a redundancy-rate-distortion optimized coefficient splitting algorithm. Simulation results show that the proposed MD coding outperforms non-adaptive MD coding under various network conditions. The proposed video streaming system is error-resilient, network-adaptive, and provides a relatively constant video quality in time-varying networks, and therefore can be a promising solution for robust video communication in wireless ad-hoc networks.
