Abstract :
District Line Fleet is part of the District Line business unit of London Underground Limited´s (LUL) Passenger Services Directorate, employing 150 managers, skilled, semi-skilled and administrative staff at its two depots, Ealing Common at the west end of the line and Upminster at the east. These depots are responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the 75 D78 trains operated by the District Line to provide the peak 66 train service (excluding those used on the Edgware Road branch). Some daily train preparation work is also undertaken by the District Line on behalf of the Circle and Metropolitan Line. The annual maintenance budget for 1997/98 was £8m, including staff and nonstaff costs for both preventative maintenance, casualty maintenance and minor modifications. This paper describes an in-house project to get both depots registered to BS EN ISO 9002 which began in April 1996 and reached a successful conclusion some nineteen months later in November 1997
