Abstract
A discussion is presented of the impact of new trends in software engineering and particularly in artificial intelligence on the design of devices for making easier the communication of handicapped with other people or with their physical environment. Software generation is described too, focusing on the object-oriented approach. It is shown that AI and software engineering can provide good flexibility, better adaptability to the specificities of each handicap, a better speed/effort ratio, and cost reduction.<>
