Failure rate is usually derived from life distribution functions. To establish a direct correlation between failure rate and failure controlling variables, the present paper analyzes the causal relationship between failure rate curve shape and the probabilistic property of load-strength interaction, develops load-strength interference relationship based failure rate model. For a typical mechanical system, operation load is a random process, and component strength degrades over load history. As component failure occurs when a load higher than the residual strength appears and any component failure will cause system failure, failure rate model can be developed based on the probabilistic characteristics of load and that of residual strength.
