Abstract :
This article provides a history of Ethernet (Gigabit Ethernet vs. other technologies) and an overview of the High Speed LAN Technologies. It presents an evaluation of current networking trends, applications and needs. Included is an overview of 10Mb/s Ethernet and Fast Ethernet, the use of Ethernet terms and acronyms such as 10Base-T and VLAN and Gigabit Ethernet´s applicability to fulfil market needs. It discusses the Gigabit Ethernet technologies and the 80/20 rule (20% of all traffic is in the backbone and 80% is local)
