Abstract
The author addresses the issue of millwide control using a PLC-based platform with a unified, simple programming language for all mill areas, from the control of sophisticated sectional drives on high-speed paper machines up to MD and CD profile controls. Emphasis is placed on maximizing uptimes in the form of sophisticated diagnostic tools which will be further developed and enhanced. The modularity of the system allows the simple single cell or island solution to be expanded, while still retaining overall transparency, and the standardized Ethernet bus allows a true open architecture, permitting flexibility in vendor selection.<>
