Abstract :
Paraplegic subjects have been fitted with percutaneous intramuscular electrodes and 48-channel muscle simulators. Preprogrammed stimulation patterns with automatic next-step triggering were used to control walking. Problems encountered include coordination of voluntary and paralyzed muscle, high metabolic energy costs and poor hip/trunk stability.<>
