Abstract
With its rapid development during recent years, the virtual reality (VR) technology has uncovered a new way to distance education - virtual experiment (VE). Traditional virtual experiment solutions confront with either the lack of scientific management or the difficulties in further extensions. In this paper, we develop an OpenLab platform with virtual experiment learning system to provide a comprehensive solution in knowledge training, virtual experiment practicing, course support, as well as teaching process management. Functional and software architectures of OpenLab are formulated based on the analysis of different roles in distance education procedures. In addition, details in software and network deploy requirements, as well as background technical information are presented. Years of practice and experiences have shown that this OpenLab platform satisfies most of the distance education demands and stimulates the enthusiasm of students in learning and practicing greatly.
