Abstract
The evolution of computer architectures is reviewed, starting from the introduction of the von Neumann sequential machine and going through its various innovations up to the microprocessor. Its limitations are examined, and two main lines of further development are considered: the parallel von Neumann architectures and the new architectures based on new models of computation (dataflow, reduction machines). The trend toward a general-purpose parallel von Neumann architecture is stressed, and future architectures based on new technologies are mentioned
