Abstract :
The authors describe the use of thermal waves to detect delaminations or poor adhesion of coatings on various substrate materials. The thermal waves are generated by an argon laser and the total wave on the surface of the sample is picked up with an IR (infrared) detector. The phase and amplitude of the wave are analyzed for properties that characterize adhesion. Results are presented for a Cr2O3 coating on a steel substrate. The authors also describe a fast synchronous IR scanning method
