Abstract :
A new family of spirally wound medium power lithium thionyl chloride (MP-LTC) batteries has been developed. The electrical and safety performance of D-size jelly roll medium power Li/SOCl2 cells is presented. Tadiran medium power D size cells extend the performance of the bobbin type cell. It was demonstrated that the MP-LTC cell is capable of delivering high energy at medium rate. The abusive safety and environmental tests performed on these cells at Tadiran and at Underwriter´s Laboratories (UL) clearly indicate that their safety level is very high. Any tendency for a particular failure mode was accelerated and would certainly have been discovered. The successful completion of the safety testing shows that the safety level of the medium power cells is comparable to that of the bobbin type cells with a bonus of better electrical performance
