Abstract
Sky observation requires great amounts of data collection. With the advances of the accuracy of observation tools over the decades, many new objects are appearing in the images to be catalogued. The automated star/galaxy discrimination problem is a broadly studied issue within the framework of research in astronomical imaging. The success of a discrimination task depends on the features selected to characterize both classes of interest. In this work we propose an original approach to characterize these astronomical objects through the use of mathematical morphology (MM), based on shape-size information
