Abstract
Summary form only given. In this paper we present laser designs that begin to address the issues of size, cost and fragility of femtosecond sources. We have shown that it is possible to reduce the threshold of femtosecond Cr:LiSAF lasers sufficiently that cheap single-spatial-mode, narrow-stripe red laser diodes (output power /spl sim/50 mW) become viable pump sources.
