Abstract :
AC traction system technology is discussed in light of the issues of design maturity, current state of the art, adaptability to the North American freight railroad environment, and its introduction into North America. A description of what a North-American AC traction system locomotive might look like is given. Descriptions of European and North-American AC traction system equipped locomotives are presented. The issue of wheel diameter mismatch, and the near-term prospects for implementation of this technology in North America are also discussed
