Abstract :
Summary form only given. An electroabsorption modulator (EAM) based optical signal processing has been demonstrated up to 40 Gb/s, using weak CW input to probe the nonlinear transmission modulation induced by intense pulses. We investigated AND operation using two counter-propagating data streams in an EAM. With proper timing between the two input data pulses, either one of the stream can be used as the output with performance significantly better than that with only a CW probe. A transmission time window of /spl sim/10 ps can be achieved with proper input power of the pulse streams. Operation at 100 Gb/s is feasible for such a gate.
