Abstract :
Considers the reliability of the physical carrier part of a fiber optic transmission line. Common failure mechanisms are reviewed, and the peculiarities of the optical medium are pointed out. Particular attention is given to optical fiber mechanical strength, radiation-induced effects, and hydrogen-induced effects. Interconnection-device reliability and submarine cable system reliability are also examined
