Abstract :
Summary form only given. We have simulated and demonstrated a new side-coupler for pumping DC fibers. The simplicity and efficiency of the coupler makes it possible to scale the output power of the fiber lasers and amplifiers to very high powers. The side-coupler can easily be used for co-pump or counter-pump configuration. Furthermore, repeated use of the side-coupler is beneficial for management of the pump light distribution along the DC fiber (pump powers are supplied where they are most needed, avoiding the region where excess pump power is wasted).
