Abstract :
SPN is a very sensitive part of the broadband network. It is estimated that about 20% of all future investments in telecommunications will be done in the SPN. The author discusses some of the most essential criteria for designing the SPN, such as technical aspects, service aspects, functional requirements, and evolution strategy. SPN features discussed are network topology, transmission medium, reference configuration, multiplexing schemes, signalling, and NT2 functions. It is concluded that the SPN should be designed so that a specific terminal can be connected via a standard interface to any SPN. This process is closely related to the standardization of the broadband ISDN (integrated services digital network) as a whole
