Abstract
In this paper, a squirrel cage with unevenly distributed bars is proposed for line start permanent magnet synchronous motors (LSPMSM) in order to improve the motor performance. Taking a 3-phase 15kW LSPMSM for example, from finite element analysis (FEA) results, it is proved that both the back EMF and the phase currents are optimized with lower harmonics, and the torque ripple during steady state operation is reduced.
