Abstract :
Porous piezoelectric ceramic transducers appropriate for medical ultrasonic imaging have been developed. The 3-3 type piezoelectric ceramics were made by sintering a mixture of PZT (lead zinc titanate) and polymer powders at about 1300°C. Porous ceramics with a maximum pore size of 40 μm were obtained. The acoustic impedance is in the range of 10 to 18 Mrayl. The electromechanical coupling factor is 0.45-0.67, and the mechanical Q is 5-15. Using these elements, mechanical sector scanners were fabricated. They generated acoustic pulses with very short ringdown times, which resulted in improved axial spatial resolution
