Abstract
The authors survey various recent approaches to achieving good packet error rate (PER) performance and compare with the sphere packing bound (SPB). As a reference to what can be expected for short codes, the Hamming (8,4) and Golay (24,12) codes with optimum decoding are 0.5 dB from the SPB at a PER of 10/sup -4/. For somewhat larger packet lengths, up to about 100 bits, block codes such as BCH codes with suboptimal soft decision decoding provide PER performance within 0.45 dB of the SPB.
