Abstract
Analyzing the ever-growing market prospects of mobile map services and widespread applications of J2ME client techniques, the paper, firstly, discusses J2ME advantages compared with WAP and BREW in aspects of Web interaction, in-situ data storage or access, software development efficiency etc. And then, it puts emphasis on such programming keynotes as map blocking and local multi-level caching in handheld devices; three strategies of single-thread, dynamic or static multi-thread for network requests; as well as low-level terminal graphical user interfaces. It has been validated that these skills have speeded up the map roaming, geo-reference data retrieval, and improved users´ experiences through the J2ME-based map service prototype. In the end, some conclusion and future-work has been addressed briefly.
