Abstract :
The authors discuss operations systems (OS) to network element (NE) communications to support switched multimegabit data service (SMDS), a proposed connectionless service concept that will permit a telephone company to meet emerging customer demand for high-speed data communications within a metropolitan area. SMDS will initially be supported by NEs based on metropolitan area network (MAN) technology for which the transport of operations data will be essential. Specific considerations for SMDS in the context of a forward-looking operations environment are discussed. A framework for OS-NE operations communications is described that offers several alternatives potential suppliers of NEs used to provide SMDS
