Abstract :
The torque-speed performance of a three phase brushless DC motor with a wye open drive is investigated. A thermal lumped parameter model is developed and validated by experiments. Torque-speed limits are then evaluated for various thermal conditions, e.g., free convection, forced convection with heat sink, using the thermal model. The evaluations are for an open frame, twelve-slot, two-magnet pole rotor, brushless DC motor
