Abstract
A tool to aid design of secure networks, the security engineering expert designer, is described. Guidance provided by the expert system includes automatically determining the classification of unspecified software or hardware components. The authors describe the basic technical approach used in representing and modeling trusted networks, and show how the tool can be applied to greatly decrease the time and cost to develop and deploy multilevel secure systems. They discuss examples derived from its initial application to the US Navy´s communication support system multimedia, multilevel secure network
