Abstract :
For several years now, operators of remote telecom equipment cabinets have been bashing the battery industry over the shortcomings of valve regulated lead acid (VRLA) batteries. Over the last couple of years, many telecom operators have actively started looking for more durable and reliable power backup solutions. As part of this program, Bellcore was engaged to test alternative energy storage systems suitable for outdoor cabinet applications. An advanced Ni-Cd battery system, the product of extensive research to optimize batteries for electric vehicle use, received positive recommendation from Bellcore. Bellcore then encouraged participating Bell Companies to begin field trials to validate the laboratory findings. Field tests are currently in progress, and so far the results have been very positive. This paper provides details and results from these tests. The paper also briefly describes the development and technology behind this advanced nickel-cadmium battery system and points out the specific properties that make it suitable for operation in the severe conditions that exist in outdoor telecom cabinets. Further, it discusses operation, maintenance and life cycle cost
