Abstract
The author describes a downlink acquisition procedure designed for a frequency-hopped, man-portable, EHF satellite communications terminal. The acquisition procedure uses a very low energy threshold to allow synchronization to occur on signals received in sidelobes. The probability of a false alarm due to noise above threshold is reduced by using an algorithm to identify the signal pattern from among the threshold crossings. After the initial synchronization, the spatial search continues in order to align the mainlobe with the satellite. This procedure leads to a reduction in acquisition time when compared to a traditional acquisition scheme that acquires only through the mainlobe
