Abstract :
Free-space optical communication systems include systems which only respond to in-beam (or unscattered) light as well as systems specifically designed to utilize scattered light. Receivers designed to operate with scattered light signals are fundamentally different from unscattered-light receivers. The author discusses their particular properties, with examples drawn from underwater, ground-based, airborne, and spaceborne applications
