Abstract :
Summary form only given. Recently we presented first experimental results on chirped pulse stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) in a solid state Raman shifter [Ba(NO/sub 3/)/sub 2/] pumped with 1.5-mJ, 790-nm uncompressed pulses from a 1-kHz Ti:sapphire regenerative amplifier and subsequent recompression of the 1-st Stokes pulse. Chirping of the pump pulses served to suppress intensity dependent effects like self-phase modulation, self-focusing and continuum generation which have lower threshold when the pulse duration approaches the Raman mode dephasing time T/sub 2/. Ba(NO/sub 3/)/sub 2/ has a strong A/sub g/-vibrational Raman mode at 1047.3 cm/sup -1/ with a linewidth of 0.4 cm/sup -1/ (T/sub 2/ = 25 ps). The successful recompression indicates linear chirp transfer. To analyze how the linear chirp of the pump pulse influences the properties of the Stokes pulse we consider here the set of basic equations for the description of SRS in the plane wave approximation and in a frame moving with the pump pulse.
