Abstract :
The effect of the order of application of hyperthermia and photodynamic therapy on the effectiveness of the combination therapy was investigated. The experiments were performed at 41 degrees C and 42 degrees C with Chinese hamster ovary cells. For heat application prior to DHE sensitization, the interaction of the two therapies is less than additive for a 41 degrees C heat exposure, and greater than additive for a 42 degrees C heat exposure. For heat applications during irradiation, the interaction of the two therapies is additive for both levels of heat exposure. For heat application following irradiation, the interaction of the two therapies is slightly greater than additive for a 41 degrees C heat exposure and greater than additive for a 42 degrees C heat exposure. Two conclusions are drawn: (1) sequencing is an important factor in the interaction of these two therapies; and (2) the most effective order of application is dependent on the temperature.<>
