Abstract :
The author describes the method used to solve the following problem. One is given a set of multimedia circuits (links) required for a specific deployment, resources (transmitters, receivers, modems, etc.) that are required for these circuits, and a pool of resources available to implement these links. Many of the equipments in the resource pool have multiple capabilities. When the pool of resources is assembled, it is intended to satisfy a large class of sets of circuits that are likely to be required in field deployments. After the needs of the deployment are satisfied, the residual resources are intended to be available for future requirements and spares. The objective function that is used is intended to satisfy the circuit requirements with resources from the pool and to retain the most versatile residual resources in the pool to satisfy future requirements and maintain spares. Since the ideal computer solution requires excess computer capability and time, the author uses a dynamic programming approach that yields close-to-optimum results with modest computer requirements and solution time
