Abstract :
Summary form only given. Controlling the spectral phase difference between pulses is useful for quantum control and coherent optical communication. The optical amplitude and phase at each color of the signal pulse can be separately adjusted by the acoustooptic modulator (AOM), and this can be rapid. In conjunction with a reference pulse (an exact copy of the pre-shaped signal pulse), both amplitude and coded phase of the waveform can then be recovered by spectral interference based pulse detection methods. We show that comparing the spectral interference pattern to one obtained after a /spl pi//2 phase only shift in the AOM driving voltage (thus creating a pair of quadrature optical pulses successively) resolves the sign ambiguity with phase leading or lagging the reference point, and doubles the dynamic range.
