Abstract :
Summary form only given. A compact magnetically insulated transmission line oscillator (MILO) with TE11 mode output is optimized by numerical simulation. The radius of the cavity is optimized to avoid electrical breakdown and enhance power conversion efficiency. Three rows of metallic rods are introduced into the coaxial output region to provide a return path for the load electrons. They also works as a TEM-TE11 mode converter because the periodic metallic rods form a photonic crystal and it serves as a phase shifter[1]. In simulation, high-power microwave is generated with peak power of 6.12 GW, frequency of 1.56 GHz, and peak power conversion efficiency of 15.5%, when the voltage is 720 kV and the current is 55 kA. The generated microwave is TEM mode and is transformed into TE11 mode after it propagates down the rods region.
