Abstract
Summary form only given. A frequency-shifted feedback laser is a frequency-chirped light source with a high chirp linearity and a high chirp rate. Several applications based on optical frequency domain reflectometry using such lasers have been investigated. These include optical ranging, temperature and pressure sensing, and measuring the dispersion of optical fibers. In these applications, there was a problem with the dynamic range of the measurement system, which was caused by destructive interference between the laser output comb components. As a solution, we applied mode locking to the FSF laser and studied oscillation characteristics of the mode-locked FSF laser.
