Abstract :
Summary form only given. Er-doped fiber amplifiers have been extensively studied as a key device for wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) optical communication due to its high gain and low noise. However, the C band gain spectrum of EDFA has a inherent peak at 1.53 /spl mu/m, which will cause significant gain band reduction when EDFAs are cascaded. To achieve a flat gain spectrum, several techniques have been proposed, such as external filters, and a new type of fiber design. Dynamic gain tilt adjustment, however, is necessary to actively regulate variation of channel power, which can induce a large penalty in cascaded amplifier systems. In this paper, we propose a new type of dynamic gain tilt adjustment for EDFA using stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) process in P/sub 2/O/sub 5/-SiO/sub 2/ fiber spliced after EDF.
