Abstract :
High efficiency is the key advantage of permanent-magnet motors (PMMs). This paper compares two major PMM topologies, the internal PMM (IPMM) and the surface PMM (SPMM) by applying geometry optimisation. Simulation and experimental results are compared to indicate the suitability for in-wheel electric vehicle applications. EMF distortion and field weakening are demonstrated in both motor topologies under various loading conditions illustrating IPMM topology advantages in this class of problems.
