Abstract :
One of the switching overvoltage reduction methods of ultra high voltage (UHV) transmission line is to use a pre-insertion resistor in the circuit breaker. There are no comprehensive and specific references concerning the pre-insertion resistor. In this paper, utilizing the closing resistor for switching overvoltage reduction is completely studied. In addition, the installation of inductor and capacitor in parallel with circuit breaker is comprehensively studied. The advantages of using resistor in parallel with circuit breaker instead of the inductor and capacitor are also compared. The analyses are verified by simulations on an actual 400 kV transmission line of Azerbaijan province network in Iran using ATPDRAW software and Electro Magnetical Transient Program.
