Abstract :
Summary form only given. Nonlinear time-resolved spectroscopy on vibrational modes in molecules has been a rapidly evolving field of research in the last few years due to the growing availability of high-quality ultrafast mid-infrared laser sources. Such sources can be highly tunable free-electron lasers (FELs). We investigate further amplification of the tunable (4-250 /spl mu/m) mid-infrared pulses from the FELIX FEL through parametric amplification in a 10-mm long AgGaS/sub 2/ crystal (Moltech, Berlin, Germany). The parametric amplification (or difference-frequency mixing) is done with a powerful pump beam at shorter wavelengths.
