Abstract :
A charged-particle detector telescope array consisting of large-area 2.5-mm-thick Si(Li) Delta E detectors backed by approximately 50 mm*150 mm BGO scintillator-PMT (photomultiplier tube) E detectors has been developed, calibrated, and used to detect energetic fragments from collisions of 85 MeV/u /sup 20/Ne on Ta. The BGO can provide fast timing information (<1 ns full width at half maximum) for additional particle identification, coincidence measurements, etc. The BGO scintillators were made at the Shanghai Institute of Ceramics as part of an ongoing R&D program which also includes development of radiation-hard BaF/sub 2/ and BGO.<>
