  • Abstract
The UFC-colloid additive (Super Bontec) has been tested in lead acid batteries used in forklifts, taxi cabs, airplane starters, electric vehicles and trains. In most of the old batteries tested, the specific gravity of the electrolyte increased and the capacities were recovered significantly after addition. These results demonstrate that the additive, made of UFC (ultra fine carbon) colloid, has the capability to extend significantly the life of a battery for most of the batteries tested. The additive can extend the life of the battery but only when added to the battery after it has been in service for at least 50% of its normal life. The additive is effective for extending the life of batteries with sulfated negative electrodes. It is not effective if failure is associated with corrosion of the positive electrode. Additions of the UFC-colloid (Super Bontec) to a new battery is not effective since the colloid additive can be oxidized at the positive electrode
