Abstract :
Examines optical frequency division multiplexing (FDM) applied to various networks and compare FDM to other multiplexing technologies, including TDM (time division multiplexing) and SDM (space division multiplexing). It is shown that when high-speed transmission technology (e.g., 1 Tb/s transmission) is not feasible, optical FDM is an alternative of TDM. It is also shown that optical FDM bus or ring configuration multinode systems are attractive from the viewpoints of network cost and reliability and that optical FDM information distribution will enhance wideband distributed service such as HDTV (high-definition television)
