Abstract :
Summary form only given. The production of neutral mesons in relativistic heavy ion collisions has been investigated using the photon spectrometer TAPS (Three Arm Photon Spectrometer). The detector comprises 320 plastic-BaF/sub 2/ scintillator telescopes (NE102A: thickness d=5 mm, BaF/sub 2/: crystal length L=250 mm, hexagonal diam. D=59 mm). The mesons are identified by means of an invariant mass analysis of the pair of decay photons. A clean photon measurement requires an efficient discrimination against particles which are produced with high multiplicity in heavy ion reactions. Attention has been given to the individual detector response to high-energy photons and particles, the identification of charged particles and neutrons exploiting pulse shape analysis in BaF/sub 2/, and the experimental resolutions and limitations on the invariant mass analysis.<>
