Abstract :
Examines data performance in integrated packet switched voice and data systems in which voice control is applied. The analysis is based on a fluid flow approximation, and results are validated by computer simulation. Three types of systems with different queueing disciplines and control schemes are considered: (i) voice and data are served FIFO (first in first out) using an infinite buffer; (ii) voice has priority over data, with infinite buffers for both voice and data; and (iii) voice has priority over data with no buffering for voice. In each case congestion control is effected by voice packet discard. An example illustrates the improvement of data performance under voice control and shows a tradeoff between data delay and voice blocking probability. It is also shown that data performance is very sensitive to voice control, especially for the case where voice has priority
