Abstract
The microstructure of ytterbium, holmium, and yttrium ceramics was investigated using a reflection acoustic microscope. Acoustic images of surface and subsurface layers were obtained with a resolution of ⩽1 μm. The interpretation of the images is given. Estimates of Rayleigh wave velocity on the surface of single crystallites were obtained using V (z ) curves. The results illustrate the prospects of using acoustic microscopy for the investigation of the microstructure of high-temperature superconductive ceramics and for the measurement of the local elastic properties of such materials
