Abstract :
In recent years many strides have been achieved in the areas of smart homes and Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). In this paper, both are utilized to achieve energy management regarding comfort control in residential spaces. New algorithms are designed to achieve comfort control in terms of temperature and relative humidity in these spaces. These algorithms are to be implemented on errorless Zigbee Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) over existing HVAC systems. They are then simulated using a Java-based discrete event simulator. The key addition of these algorithms is that each residential zone is treated independently, unlike current HVACs which deal with a residential floor as a whole. The results are compared to a ready-made simulator by DesignBuilder©, keeping the residential environment in both simulations exactly alike. The ensuing results prove that these new algorithms provide significant monetary savings over stand-alone HVAC systems.
