Abstract :
Summary form only given. Microstrip gas chambers have been used for the first time in a fixed target experiment at the CERN SPS (NA-12). A forward magnetic spectrometer made of eight planes of microstrip chambers (10/sup 3/ analog channels) has been operated in a high-intensity proton beam (10/sup 7/ particles/burst). A 0.1% momentum resolution at 450 GeV has been measured.<>
