Abstract :
Summary form only given, as follows. The active-passive neutron examination and assay unit extends the traditional differential dieaway technique for the nondestructive assay of transuranic (TRU) waste by providing imaging information on the distribution of any TRU material within the waste, on the absorption of thermal neutrons by the waste matrix, and on the effects moderating and absorption by the matrix on neutrons both from the neutron generator and from fissioning TRU material. The combination of the measurement results with the imaging information leads to a much more accurate and less subjective determination of the actual TRU contents of the waste.<>
