Abstract :
A novel data acquisition subsystem (DAS) has been developed to provide a single data acquisition unit for collecting the three most frequently needed data for safeguards, i.e. neutron coincidence data, high-resolution gamma-ray spectra, and data from electromechanical or other sensors. The DAS automatically detects the presence of nuclear materials in the measurement cavity and is able to transmit the acquired data to a host computer via a local network. In addition, the DAS can store the neutron coincidence data for up to 30 days should the host computer fail. Data encryption is included in the data transmission to the host computer with timely information on the functioning of the detector systems, the counting electronics, and the DAS itself. The hardware components of the DAS are described, as are the unit to which it can be directly interfaced, and the software which allows it to operate in an unattended mode. The application of the DAS in safeguards is discussed as are possible applications in other areas involving neutron and gamma-ray detection.<>
